CNC Turned Aluminum Alloy Knob for the Aerospace Industry

Composed of aluminum alloy 6061-T651, this knob was designed for use in an avionics application. Fabrication required the use of our precision CNC turning capabilities including facing, outside diameter turning, knurling, creation of slots, chamfers, as well as drilling and tapping. The raw stock was machined on a CNC lathe which utilizes a sub spindle, and live tooling.

Deburring was completed on a speed lathe with a wire wheel. The finished knob featured dimensions of 0.495″ in diameter, 0.430″ in depth, and met tolerances of +0.002″/- 0.000″, with angles of ±1°, and featured a surface finish of 125 RMS. Finishing included the application of a Chem Film Yellow per MIL-DTL-5541F Class 1A Type I, spray painting of black per FED-STD-595. The indicator line was filled white per FED-STD-595 color #37875. Quality control is maintained though dimensional and CMM inspections as well as thread gauge, visual, and final inspections. We manufacture 250 of these components annually for this customer in Chandler, Arizona.
